Belfast City

The name Belfast originates from the Gaelic ‘Beal Feirste’, which means ‘mouth of the river’.

Belfast was voted one of the world’s top destinations for 2012. Belfast’s maritime heritage is portrayed at its best with the sensational new Titanic Belfast visitor attraction. Visitors can explore and experience first-hand the Titanic Quarter where Titanic was built and marvel at the city skyline dominated by the world famous Samson and Goliath cranes. Temperature

Northern Ireland enjoys relatively cool summers. Daily temperature in August is on average 14.5°C. The weather in August is marginally dry with rain sometimes.

Shopping

Shopping in Belfast is special. Why? Because they have high street stores, family owned businesses, designer boutiques, markets and the incredible Victoria Square Shopping Centre – all within minutes of each other. Shops in Belfast City Centre are generally open Monday – Wednesday 9am – 6pm, Thursday 9am – 9pm, Friday and Saturday 9am – 6pm and Sunday 1pm – 6pm. Some shop opening hours may vary, including during holiday periods.

Insurance

The Conference Organising Committee or its agents will not be responsible for any medical expenses, loss or accidents incurred during the conference. Delegates are strongly advised to arrange their own personal insurance to cover medical and other expenses including accident or loss. Where a delegate has to cancel for medical reasons, the normal cancellation policy will apply. It is recommended that citizens from EU countries bring with them a current EHIC card.

Tax Refunds

Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged at 20% on most goods. Cash back is the simplest and most widely used VAT refund service that issues cash refunds on departure for a handling fee. Ask for cash back form when you make your purchase.

Tipping: A small tip is appreciated for good service. Tipping is not usual in pubs and bars. Tipping cabs is generally 10%, although this is not essential.
Currency: The currency in Northern Ireland is Sterling. Major credit cards are widely accepted.
Smoking: Under Northern Irish law smoking is not permitted in pubs, restaurants, hotel lobbies and all enclosed public buildings.
Electricity: 220 volts
Time: From March to October, Northern Ireland operates on Greenwich Mean Time + 1 hour.
